PET — the Most Recycled Waste Plastic in Europe

Petcore Europe, a Belgian nonprofit trade group, said in a statement that PET is currently recycled in large quantities in Europe, according to news reports.

Data released by the trade group showed that 65 billion (1.64 million tons) of PET bottles were recycled in Europe in 2013, up 7 percent from the same period last year.

Roberto Bertaggia, President of Petcore Europe, said demand for PET has been increasing in Europe in recent years. At present, this kind of plastic has been widely used in many fields. As a popular packaging material, the reproducibility of PET will directly affect its future market development prospects.

"From a sustainability perspective, we are pleased to see that 56 per cent of all PET containers in circulation were recycled in 2013. Higher recycling rates could help alleviate Europe's overcapacity problem. Roberto Bertaggia said.

At the same time, Petcore Europe notes that there is a wide gap between eu member states when it comes to PET recycling rates. According to the association, European countries should join hands and take active measures to achieve the ambitious target set by the European commission for the significant increase of PET recycling utilization.

"Standardised collection and pervanden Dungen, President of the European association of plastic recyclers, said:" this pervanden approach to classification will lead to increased PET recovery.
